Case Study: Custom Manufacturing of Street Furniture

Project brief
The bespoke manufacture of street furniture was the main objective of this case study for a German client. ALUPRESS DESIGN was approached with a request for a robust, aesthetically pleasing and long-term sustainable solution for public spaces. The aim was therefore to develop a robust, aesthetically pleasing and sustainable solution that takes into account the character of the locations whilst meeting the high standards required in terms of functionality and safety.

Proposed solution

Based on the investor’s requirements, designs were developed that combine modern aesthetics, high-quality construction and efficient manufacturing processes. The focus was on:

High weather resistance,
Minimal maintenance,
Long service life of the structure,
Aesthetic integration into the public space.
Safety in use, particularly with regard to installation in nurseries.

Production

Manufacturing takes place at the ALUPRESS DESIGN plant, utilising the company’s own production facilities. The structural components are made from steel sections which have been hot-dip galvanised and subsequently finished with a polyester powder coating suitable for outdoor use, thereby ensuring long-term protection against corrosion. The individual components are machined with precision and then assembled into the final sub-assemblies.

The manufacturing process also includes quality control of the individual parts, as well as assembly and checks on structural stability prior to dispatch.

Packaging

Just as with design and manufacturing, particular attention must also be paid to transport packaging. Here, we have developed a completely new packaging method to minimise damage whilst maximising space savings during transport. The base consists of an MDF board. The structures themselves are first carefully wrapped in PET foam, including the corners, and then each part is completely wrapped in black stretch film. If several elements are packed together in a single package, a single layer of sturdy cardboard is used as a divider.

Implementation

Once production is complete, our client carries out the installation of the furnishings themselves; however, ALUPRESS frequently organises the logistics for delivery to various locations throughout Germany. Thanks to the careful preparation and coordination of the individual steps, the installations run smoothly and on schedule.

The result is functional and aesthetically pleasing elements of the public space that contribute to visitors’ comfort and enhance the appeal of the respective location.

Thanks to this particular client’s satisfaction, our collaboration is continuing to grow, and we are currently working on the manufacture and delivery of the aforementioned elements, including table tops and cover panels made from various materials, though mostly from compact HPL panels.
